작가에게 드로잉은 내면에 남아 있는 감정의 부스러기 같은 것들을 쏟아내기에 편한 작업이다. 모형 자를 이용한 드로잉에서는 어릴 적 심취했던 만화나 게임의 영향이 감지되는 캐릭터가 등장하기도 한다. 백경호는 드로잉을 통해 포착한 조형 언어를 캔버스 위로 가져오는데, 구상과 추상적 표현 사이를 오가며, 아크릴, 유화, 스프레이 등 다양한 재료를 이용하여 이미지를 해체하고 덮는 행위를 반복하며 회화적 실험을 진행한다.
구형의 캔버스와 직사각형의 캔버스를 병치시킨 ‘인큐베이터’ 연작 역시 이 회화적 실험의 연장선상에 놓여 있는데, 작가는 공간에서 팔을 저은 듯 자유로운 붓질의 구형 캔버스와 직사각 캔버스의 일정한 스트라이프를 대비시켜 이 사이에서 긴장감을 유발시킨다.
To Baek, drawing is a convenient medium through which he can let out his internal conflicts and sentiments: in his drawings made using template rulers, some characters appear, reflecting influences from his childhood fascination for comics and video games. The artist translates the visual language captured in the drawings onto canvas to freely experiment between the figurative and abstract painting. Applying various materials such as acrylic, oil and spray, he deconstructs and embeds the images. In Incubator Series, he juxtaposes round and square canvases, reflecting his continuing experiment. In the round canvas strokes are more expressive as if made by moving the arm in the air, while in contrast, on the square one regular stripes appear constructing a certain tension between the two canvases.
