Often the medium in Frize’s paintings is very fluid and so dries flat – as striated areas subside and merge to find a common level while they are still wet – and thereby it further problematises the concept of an inspired artist’s touch. Texture is often adduced as a clue painting to artistic originality, flatness being associated with reproduced imagery. Together with the emphasis on process, this kind of art might be mistaken for conceptualism, were it not for the fact that Frize’s paintings are much more than mere by-products. They couldn’t be further from formalism and yet they occur to us very strongly as objects, and are so eloquent about themselves.

대개 프리즈의 그림의 매체는 묽은 액체라, 마르면서 매끈해진다. 줄무늬가 도드라진 부분들은 마르지 않은 상태에서 퍼지고 채워지면서 같은 높이가 된다. 따라서 영감을 받은 화가의 붓터치라는 개념을 더욱 문제적으로 만든다. 흔히 질감은 예술적 원본성을 가늠하는 지표가 되고, 평면성은 복제된 이미지와 연결된다. 과정을 강조하는 이러한 종류의 예술을 개념주의로 오해할 수 있지만, 프리즈의 회화가 개념주의의 단순한 부산물 이상이라는 점에는 의심의 여지가 없다. 프리즈의 작품들은 형식주의를 벗어나지 않지만, 아주 강하게 오브제로 다가오고, 스스로에 대해 많은 이야기를 한다.
