최수연은 오늘날 무속인이나 소위 사이비라고 일컬어지는 종교인들의 일상과 의식을 관찰한다. 작가는 대체로 세속적이며 조악한 이들의 종교 의식에 이질감을 느끼지만 동시에 이들을 열중하게 만드는 세계관의 원동력에 대해서 궁금해 한다. 그리고 이들의 의상과 의식 속에서 정체불명의 양식들을 발견하고, 이들이 이루는 군상과 풍경의 표면성을 투명한 유화 붓질을 통해 드러내고자 한다. 그러나 작가는 회화를 담아낸 이들의 조악한 장엄함이 한 무신론자의 조소가 아니라 동시대 삶의 한 장면을 포착한 서늘한 풍속화가 되기를 희망한다.
Suyeon Choe analyzes the life and rituals of so-called heretical shamans and religious groups. Her curiosity about the motivations for beliefs that lead people to enthusiastic practice prevails over the sense of alienation confronting their secular and kitsch manifestations. Choe discovers certain iconology that is apparent in their costumes and rituals and the formalistic surface of those groups and environments is embodied in her transparent oil brush strokes. But the artist’s attempt doesn’t aim to fall into atheist sarcasm toward those groups’ banal scene of sublime depicted by her painting, but to portray a facet of our contemporary life as a kind of detached caricature.
