“For me a lot of the way I approach landscape is a result of the way people perceive painting but also just the way they perceive the world in general. It translates so directly to landscape, I love that you can paint an abstract image and everyone wants to find the landscape within it. With all my paintings I don’t start with the reference for the landscape, it’s always just from my imagination; I make these abstract marks and then, at some point, I’ll see a mountain line or I’ll see a tree. The landscapes for me are built out of pure abstraction and they sort of grow out of that and mutate. But at the same time, it’s very fun to paint because you don’t have to be that realistic for people to walk up and think it’s a landscape. I don’t have to connect every tree to a branch; as long as it’s green in this area, and blue in this area, people will see landscape. So I think that is something really freeing about landscape…”

“내가 풍경에 접근하는 방식은 사람들이 회화를 인식하는 방식의 결과이기도 하지만 사람들이 세상을 인식하는 방식이기도 하다. 사람들은 세상을 바라보고 그것을 바로 풍경으로 읽는다. 내가 좋아하는 점은 추상적인 이미지를 그리고 나면, 모두들 그 안에서 풍경을 찾고자 한다는 점이다. 나는 풍경화를 그릴 때, 풍경을 염두에 두고 시작하지 않고 항상 내 상상력에서 시작한다. 추상적인 획을 긋다 보면, 어느 지점에서 능선이나 나무가 보이기 시작한다. 나에게 풍경은 순수한 추상으로부터 형성되는 것이고 풍경은 이로부터 자라나고 변모한다. 그러나 이와 동시에, 사람들이 그림에 가까이 다가와 풍경이라고 생각하게 만들 정도로 사실적일 필요가 없기 때문에 그리는 것이 재미있다. 모든 나무를 가지가 있는 것으로 그릴 필요는 없다. 어느 부분은 녹색이고 또 어느 부분은 청색이기만 하면 사람들은 풍경으로 볼 것이다. 그래서 풍경화에는 진정으로 자유롭게 하는 무언가 있다고 생각한다.”
