“모니터 화면을 바라보는 순간 작업의 출발점이 되는 것은 사각형이죠. 하지만 제가 거주하고 있는 도시의 기하학적 환경들이 막연하고도 추상적으로 의식 속에 자리잡고 있었을 거에요. 공간을 다루었던 과거의 수많은 작가들도 당연히 레퍼런스가 되겠죠. 그들의 구축방식이 있다면 나만의 구축방식을 찾고 싶었고요. 그러니까 제게 있어 작업의 대상이란 어떤 구체적 오브제라기보다 그 오브제가 만들어지는 시스템 자체라는 생각이 들어요. … 패턴을 만들기 위해 노력한다기보다는 패턴은 결과적으로 만들어지는 것이라고 생각합니다. 음악이 흘러나오고 몸이 자연스럽게 움직이는 것이지 계획적으로 움직이진 않죠. 움직이다 보면 어떤 패턴이 생기는데, 문제는 그것이 얼마나 자발적인가 하는 것이겠죠. 제가 기술이나 매너를 단절시킨다고 느낀다면 그 단절이 곧 저의 매너와 기술이라고 해도 좋을 것 같습니다.”

“The first thing that comes to my mind is a square that appears in front of me when I look at a computer screen. And it all begins from there. But, somewhere in mind, the geometrical shapes and outlines of the city resides in a vague and abstract form. And of course, all those artists who I’ve met or studied, they become the references, too. If they had their ways of establishing their techniques into their works, then I must have mine. So in other words, my subject is not really the specific objét, but the system that the objét gets made in. … And, rather than saying that I strive to make a pattern on the canvas, the pattern automatically appear as I paint. To elaborate on that, the body moves in response to music, and it’s usually not choreographed. And as you move, a certain pattern appears. The important thing is to distinguish how much automated that pattern is: is it intentional? Is it spontaneous? If it seems as if my work is disconnected from technique or manner, I think it’s safe to say that the disconnection is my technique and manner.”
