조송은 먹과 장지 등 동양화의 전통적 재료를 그대로 이용하면서도 동양화와의 연결점은 물성에 대한 고민에 치중되어 있고, 작업의 내용은 인간으로서 살아가면서 느끼게 되는 보편적인 감정들에서 출발한다. 평소 간단한 문장으로 기록해둔 순간적으로 떠오르는 단상들이 작품의 제목이자 내용이 되는데, 이런 점에서 조송은 언어라는 출발점을 중요하게 생각한다. 예컨대 우연히 본 죽은 나무를 통해서 사소한 행동이 처음과 다른 결과를 만들어낼 수도 있다는 이야기를 상상하고 만든 문장 2개를 제목으로 하여 회화 연작으로 제작했다.
Song Jo appropriates the Korean traditional material of ink and fiber paper to continue the investigation around their materiality, while departing from the tradition through focusing on the fundaments of human sentiments as content of her work. Simple lines of incidental thoughts drafted in her notes become later titles and motifs for her work; thus the artist describes her approach to be language-driven. For example, a series of painting follows the two sentences born from a story Jo imagined from an observation of a dead tree she found by accident, that a mere deed can cause completely different results.
