프랑스와 서울을 오가며 작업을 하고 있는 작가 염중호는 일상에서 일어나는 일들을 사진으로 기록한다. 작가는 자신의 이미지를 기록과 상상, 재현의 중간에 존재하는 것으로 보는데, 주변의 평범하고 일상적인 대상들에서 간과하기 쉬운 그들의 관계와 질서를 찾으려 한다.
그는 버려진 것들이나 일상적이고 어쩌면 사소한 것일지도 모르는 존재들에 관심을 갖는다. 막힌 벽, 사라진 문, 또는 우스운 모습을 한 버려진 것들의 존재, 그것들과 주변과의 관계에 놓여진 혹은 사물들 간의 관계성과 그 당위성 등에 대해 고민하고 그것들을 시각화한다.
그 이미지들은 이 사회의 정치적 이슈들과는 거리가 먼 것처럼 보이지만 결국은 들여다 보면 사회가 만들어내는 이슈들을 품고 있고, 또 드러내는 은유적 장치들을 가지고 있다. 일상에서 쉽게 발견되는 가벼운 이미지들은 심각하지 않아 보일 수도 있지만, 보는 이들에 따라 여러 의미로 해석된다는 특성을 지닌다.
염중호는 이미지란 다양한 시공간에서 다른 의미들로 비추어지는 것이라 믿는다. 일상 생활에서 발견되거나 놓여진 상황의 이미지가 새로운 이야기를 만든다거나 연약하게 보이는 식물이 강한 생명력의 모습 등으로 읽힐 수 있는 것이다.
대체적으로 한번에 쉽게 읽혀지지 않는 이미지들을 통해 작가는 시각적 표현만이 할 수 있는 감정들, 부조리, 건조함, 덧없음 그리고 유머를 추구한다. 그것들은 쉽게 언어화되지 않는 사물들간의 질서와 리듬을 새롭게 그려낼 수 있게 해 사물들 간의 ‘진정한 관계’를 연상할 수 있게 한다.
Based in Seoul and Paris, Yum captures everyday snapshots with his camera. He sees his own image situated somewhere between reality and imagination, reality and reproduction. He seeks for relationship and order in mediocre, everyday subjects, what is easily overlooked.
His interest lies in things abandoned, the trivial and ordinary. He catches things like a dead-end wall, vanished door, or funny appearances of what has been thrown out, and the relationship between these things.
These captured images may seem to have nothing to do with society’s political issues, but a closer look will show how these issues are actually portrayed, either directly but usually through metaphoric devices. Unimportant images capturing things seen on a daily basis may not appear serious, but is special in that it is open to various interpretations.
Yum believes images can carry different meanings depending on time and space. Images found around or near us can become motifs for new stories, and the fragile plant can seem to have strong life.
Using abstruse images, the artist seeks to show the emotions, absurdities, dryness, transience and humor that can only be expressed through visual medium.
