Jinkyu Kwon | Biography

 

 

1922
Born in Hamheung City, Hamgyeongnam-do.

1936
Moved to Chuncheon, where his father was running a business.

1942
Drafted into Hitachi Metals Industry by the Japanese, and started his first art education in Tokyo.

1944
Secretly came back to Seoul, where he took painting lessons at Seongbuk-dong.

1947
Moves back to Japan after Korea’s independence in 1945.

1948
Enters Musashino Art University, Japan, studying under Shimizu Takashi.

1952
Won a prize in the best public contest exhibition Igwajeon, Japan.

1953
Married Kasai.

1959
Came back to Korea, due to his mother’s sickness.

1965
Had his first solo exhibition in Seoul but only a few recognized his work.

1968
Had second solo exhibition at Nihonbashi Gallery, Japan.

1971
Third solo exhibition at Myeong-dong Gallery. Suffers from physical and psychological illness.

1973

Dies in his atelier by committing suicide.
