‹카본 카피스›는 20개의 현대미술 작업 제작 시 생성된 탄소 발자국을 제공하고 있다. 탄소 발자국은 각각의 작업을 제작하기 위해 대기에 방출되었던 이산화탄소(CO₂) 배출량이다. ‹카본 카피스›는 원작들을 작은 사이즈로 다시 제작한 모형으로 정육면체 형태로 이루어졌다. 원작들에 의해 방출된 CO₂의 양이 1:5,000,000의 비율로 축소된 볼륨이 각 모형의 사이즈가 되었다. 원작의 탄소 발자국을 상쇄할 수 있는 금액을 정확히 산출하여 ‹카본 카피스›의 가격으로 산정했으며, 탄소방출 억제기금을 위한 증명서를 이 가격에 구매함으로써 탄소 발자국 상쇄가 가능하다.* 각 ‹카본 카피스›의 판매로 조성된 기금은 탄소 방출 억제금으로 전환되며 원작의 탄소 발자국은 그제야 지워지게 된다.

* 탄소 방출 억제금을 위한 모금 프로젝트는 공기 중에서 CO₂를 없애는데 필요한 탄소 포집과 저장 기술 개발 등에 적극적으로 쓰이거나 대체 에너지 개발 등에 사용된다. 한 장에 10달러인 탄소 방출 억제기금 증명서로 대기 중 1톤의 CO₂를 줄일 수 있다.

This catalogue provides calculations for the carbon footprints of 20 contemporary artworks. Each carbon footprint is the quantity of carbon dioxide emissions (CO₂), in tons, released into the atmosphere through the production of one of these artworks. The Carbon Copies are small-scale reproductions of the artworks, reconceived as cubes. They are sized according to the cubic volume of CO₂ released by the original works at a scale of 1:5,000,000. The price of each Carbon Copy is the exact dollar amount required to negate the carbon footprint of the original–through the purchase of certified carbon offsets.* The proceeds from the sale of each Carbon Copy will be converted into carbon offsets, and the carbon footprint of the original artwork released.

*Carbon offsets fund projects that actively remove CO₂ from the air (for example, carbon capture and storage), or curb its release (renewable energy). One certified carbon offset reduces one ton of CO₂ from the earth’s atmosphere at a cost of 10 USD.
