Michael Wang makes traditional art objects in general as a kind of framing mechanism: allowing non-art systems to be perceived aesthetically, or as part of an aesthetic lineage. Wang both a speculative project (it imagines another system of valuation for artworks, another system of exchange, another definition of an artwork-as-system) but also an intervention in the material world. His works are speculative practices dealing with current global issues and are translated onto the scientific-economic apparatus as like “carbon offsetting.”
Michael Wang lives and works in New York City. He holds a Masters in architecture from Princeton University, an M.A. from NYU, and a B.A. from Harvard University. Wang has worked as an art world events reporter, taught with the architect Peter Eisenman at Yale, and consulted for some of the world’s largest corporations. His works include speculative proposals for the World Economic Forum conference hall in Davos, Switzerland; and Invasive, the controlled release of invasive species. Selected exhibitions include: Primetime Gallery, Brooklyn (2012, 2010); Harvard University; Foxy Production (2012); Asia Song Society, New York (2008); and Rivington Arms, New York (2007). His critical writings have appeared in Artforum, The Architect’s Newspaper, and Modern Painters.
