그리는 방법에 대해서는 간혹 회의도 하고 다시 고민도 하지만, 저에게는 그것이 하나의 방법이 된 것 같습니다. 화면을 구성해나가는 방법이지요. 화면을 짜내고 덮어야 하는 과제가 있으니까 그런 방법들을 찾게 되는 것이라고 생각합니다. … 그림을 대하는 태도라는 것이, 여전히 이렇게 작업을 보면서, “또 안되네.”하고 앉아 있는 것이 태도지요. … 풍경으로 꽉 차 있는 그림 외에 꽃과 같은 소재를 표현할 때에는 공간을 어떻게 표현해야 하는지를 생각합니다. 배경, 빈 공간에 점을 찍었습니다. 연하게 색을 바르고 점을 튀어나오게 찍어서 빈 공간을 처리하는 방법을 사용하고 점이 없어지면서 가로, 세로의 선들을 사용하기도 했습니다.

I often contemplate or toss opinions around in regards to how to paint, and let me admit that this is a frequent thing; however, such method has also become a part of the process. It is a way to gradually fill out a canvas. I guess it comes natural because I’m engaged in a process where I have to think about the pictorial plane and cover that plane with something. … My attitude towards my works… well, I must admit that this, sitting here and saying to myself, “not a thing is coming to my mind,” is my attitude towards art, I guess. … Whenever I decide to paint other than landscapes, for example, flowers, I first think of how to control the background (instead of focusing on the subject). I dot the background, in the ’empty’ spaces. I first layer it thinly with a light shade, and then thickly dot does to fill out the empty space, so that when the dots fill up the canvas and eventually disappear, I sue the horizontal and vertical lines.
