Featured in this exhibition is the extraordinary ten-paneled work, paradoxically entitled Indivisible Painting, made by Johnson with Nava Chapman, a self-styled “artist, teacher, dreamer, seeker, Slave to Love and Beauty” also based in Australia. It is as joyous as it is pictorially ambitious, repeating a format that puts Buddhist deities in the centre of each panel, with other motifs, figures and symbols of the earth tending to gravitate towards the bottom whilst those of the sky, including clouds and aeroplanes, and heavenly visions drift upwards. The surfaces busy also with countless dots and much else besides are kept in check by an easy-going symmetry that sets up a rhythm across the work overall, culminating in the world BUDDHA surrounded by children’s drawings. It is wonderful – full of wonder.

전시에 소개되는 작품은 특이하게도 10개의 패널로 이루어진 작품이다. ‹나눌 수 없는 회화›라는 역설적인 제목을 가진 이 작품은 스스로를 ‘예술가, 교사, 몽상가, 탐구자, 사랑과 아름다움의 노예’라고 부르는 호주에서 활동하는 화가 나바 샵맨과 존슨이 협업으로 제작한 그림이다. 이 작품은 회화적으로도 야심찬 작업일 뿐만 아니라 보는 즐거움이 있는 작품이다. 패널 중심에 부처를 배치하고 다른 모티프들, 인물들, 땅의 상징들은 바닥으로 가라앉는 듯 묘사되고, 구름과 비행기와 같은 하늘의 상징들과 천사는 상승하는 형식을 반복한다. 수많은 점과 요소들로 가득 차 있는 회화 표면은 작품 전체에 리듬을 부여하는 편안한 대칭으로 조절되며, 어린아이들의 드로잉으로 둘러싸인 단어 ‘부처’로 끝난다. 그것은 경이로움 그 자체이다.
