누구나 ‘청춘’의 시기는 있다. 청소년에서 어른으로 넘어가는 시기를 그렇게 부른다. 어른이 되기까지 사람들은 각자 자기만의 계기와 일련의 사건들이 있기 마련이지만, 나에게 있어서는 그것은 밤과 자연이었다. 1988년부터 1993년까지 등산을 하며 산에서 보낸 젊음과 노래, 술과 이야기들은 내게 어른이 되기까지의 성장 과정이었다. 이 ‹아돌레센스› 사진들은 자연 속의 젊음을 담은 사진 연작이다. 기억과 현실의 중간적인 이 사진 연작은 현실에 있었던 한 사건을 기록하는 사진이자 작가의 먼 기억 속 유사한 풍경을 회화적 상상으로 연출한 사진이라는 양면성을 지닌다. 그것은 마치 있었던 일을 기록하는 사진의 다큐멘터리적 기능을 떠나 얼핏 스냅 샷처럼 보이는 이 사진들에는 작가 개인의 기억 속 그리움에 대한 아우라와 같은 재구성을 보여준다. 그것은 마치 빛으로 어둠 속에서 그림을 그려내듯 찍은 사진들이다.

Everyone experiences adolescence. It is that seminal period when one changes from being a youth to being an adult. Every person has his or her own stories and memories from this point in life. For me, being an adolescent was about countless nights spent camping in the mountains with friends. I have fond memories of growing up between 1988 and 1993, camping and hiking, acting young, singing, drinking, and sharing stories. For my series entitled Adolescence, I staged a series of photographs depicting young people in nature. What initially appears to be merely casual snapshots recording events at a camp site, are actually carefully recreated tableaux that use elaborate stage lighting – all of which are based on my own recreated memories. The photographs in Adolescence hover somewhere between reality and fiction, evoking nostalgia. They also court comparisons to allegorical paintings with their strong chiaroscuro shadows and formal composition.
