There is a modesty in Enli Zhang’s work that belies its profundity. A number of paintings, all entitled Container, depict objects – for example, a bath, a bottle, a box – isolated to suggest they have been singled out for meditative scrutiny. Their personal, domestic quality reinforces our tendency to identify with them, to see them somehow invested with life, analogous to our selves. The state of a container, at any point in time, is characterised by potential change. Fullness can be emptied out, and then the process reversed, perhaps in a predictable cycle or randomly, depending on circumstances beyond the autonomy of the container, and so a relational scheme of things – vital for us – is conveyed.

장 엔리의 작품에는 심오함을 감춘 어떤 소박함이 있다. 똑같이 ‹용기 Container›라는 제목이 붙은 여러 그림들은 각각 욕조, 병, 상자 같은 오브제를 그린 것인데, 그 오브제들 각각은 명상적 사색을 위해 신중하게 선별된 것이라는 듯, 하나씩 격리되어 있다. 오브제들의 개인적이고 가정적인 성격 때문에 우리는 그것들을 동일시하고, 그것들이 살아 있다고 여기고, 우리와 닮았다고 생각하게 된다. 하나의 용기는 그 상태가 언제든지 변할 수 있다는 특징을 갖는다. 가득 차 있다가도 비워질 수 있고, 다시 그 과정이 거꾸로 일어날 수 있고, 어쩌면 예측 가능한 주기로 혹은 무작위로, 용기는 독자성을 버리고 상황에 의존한다. 그리하여 우리에게 꼭 필요한 사물들의 관계적 체계가 전달된다.
