Ro presents two works, Thirty Thousand Dollars (2017), first performed at her BFA show and a new performance entitled Romance (2017) that was initiated during the period of her visit to the Akiyoshidai Residency, Japan, and completed for the exhibition at HITE Collection. These performances are monologues that reflect Ro’s autobiographical episodes in the USA where she grew up. Ro’s previous works such as Meeting the Ceiling (2013) and Samsa (2015) were performances showing the body coming into contact with given spatial condition, touching and confronting tools or equips, while LA-sung (2016) and Piano (2016) reveal her own development toward the storytelling based on autobiographical elements, through a more expanded usage of the stage. Especially her graduation work Thirty Thousand Dollars employs simple lines to tell a longer story, skillfully leading the narrative through an eye-catching arrangement of objects and fluid yet at times rigid choreographic movements. Romance, her new production, presents an array of fragmented words, rendering the text toward a more rhythmic utterance than a prosaic one. Echoing this narrative simplicity, the stage composition appears visually more reduced and linear.

<삼만불>은 작가가 지난해말 졸업전에서 발표했고, <로망스>는 올초 일본 아키요시다이 국제예술촌 레지던시에서 시작해 이번 하이트컬렉션 전시에 맞춰 완성한 작품입니다. 두 작품은 미국에서 성장한 작가의 자전적인 내용을 담고 있으며 일인극의 형식을 띠고 있습니다. 작가의 초기작 들은 신체가 공간의 조건과 부딪히거나 도구나 장치와 접촉, 대립하는 것을 보여주는 퍼포먼스였습니다. 그러나 지난해 발표한 <나성>(2016)과 <피아노>(2016)에서부터는 자전적인 이야기를 토대로 스토리텔링을 꾀하기 시작했고, 오브제와 함께 무대를 확장해서 사용합니다. 특히 <삼만불>은 간결한 대사들로 구성되어 있지만 꽤 긴 내용의 스토리텔링을 담고 있습니다. 이 작품에서 노혜리는 상이한 오브제들의 매력적인 매치와 부드럽지만 강단 있는 무브먼트로 극의 완급을 조절합니다. <로망스>는 대사 중간에 단어만 열거하면서 한층 축약된 스토리텔링을 보여주는데 선형적으로 구성된 무대도 특징적입니다.
