In Conversation: Amikam Toren & Jonathan Watkins

To coincide with the opening of the group exhibition Four Corners of the World at HITE Collection, Amikam Toren will be in conversation with Jonathan Watkins, Director of Ikon Gallery, Birmingham.

Toren’s works for Four Corners of the World are Armchair Painting series, which are simply made from paintings, by the artist himself buying cheap oil paintings from second-hand stores and junk shops, and then cutting out stencilled letters from the canvas fabric so that the wall behind is revealed when they are hung.

Curator Jonathan Watkins specializes extensively in contemporary art, and has been Director of Ikon Gallery since 1999.  Previously he worked for a number of years in London, as Curator of the Serpentine Gallery (1995-1997) and Director of Chisenhale Gallery (1990-1995). He has written the catalog essay for the publication accompanying this exhibition, which he has called ‘the assumed rectangular format of painting … is understood by [seven artists] to be … an encounter that happens two-dimensionally, within four corners, and internationally as painting happens wherever there is human life on the two hemispheres of this planet’.

There will be simultaneous translation available throughout the sessions.

하이트컬렉션은 그룹전 «세계의 네 모서리»의 개최와 더불어 아미캄 토렌과 조나단 왓킨스(버밍엄 아이콘 갤러리 디렉터)의 대화를 진행한다.

아미캄 토렌의 ‹안락의자 회화› 시리즈는 회화를 가지고 만든 회화로, 그는 직접 중고 상점이나 고물상에서 대개 싸구려 유화 작품을 사서 그 위에 스텐실로 찍은 문자들을 오려내어 작품을 걸었을 때 뒷면의 벽이 보이도록 했다.

전시의 기획을 맡은 조나단 왓킨스는 지난 1999년부터 영국 버밍엄 소재의 아이콘 갤러리의 디렉터를 역임, 현대미술계에서 활발한 활동을 이어오고 있다. 그는 지난 수년간 런던에 머무르며 서펜타인 갤러리(1995-1997년)와 치즌헤일 갤러리(1990-1995년)에서 각각 큐레이터와 디렉터로 일한 바 있다. «세계의 네 모서리»전 도록에서 그는 ‘이 작가들은 직사각형 형식 안에서 자신의 생각과 정서를 표현하는데 전념한다는 공통점을 가진다. 이들이 선택한 회화의 직사각형 형태는 그것을 열었을 때 진짜처럼 보이는 환영 효과를 보여주는 창문이 아니라, 무한분할이 가능한 평평한 면이다. 다시 말해 무한한 가능성을 지닌 곳, 창안의 원동력이 되고 예술가가 무언가를 상상하고 그것을 회화에 투사하도록 하는 직사각형인 셈’이라고 말한다.
