Kyuchul Ahn in Conversation with Curators and Editor

To coincide with his exhibition and his recent publication All and but Nothing, Kyuchul Ahn will be in conversation with Sunjung Kim, Sunghui Lee, and Hwalsung Park.

Ahn’s new works for All and but Nothing have been created to be seen to question the paradox of this world: Why do we fail at our endeavors? Neither is it new to us that glass cups each have their own octaves, that you can unravel the threads of a sweater to knit another, collect the rays of light reflected from mirrors to draw a round moon shape on the wall, or that each ball will reveal its own height when bounced. These are neither dramatic events nor do they seek to capture a sculptural climax. Rather, they are merely repeatedly carrying out the work that each object has been given, following from the acceptance of (and enduring) the conditions that come with each object according to its position. There is neither a world filled with unceasing dramatic events, nor the drama of art galleries that seek to suffuse themselves with more dramatic events than the world. Then what are these objects here to show us?  What kind of work are they doing?

작가 안규철과 큐레이터, 편집자 간의 대화

안규철의 전시 ‹모든 것이면서 아무것도 아닌 것›과 곧 출간되는 도록에 관하여 작가 본인과 큐레이터 김선정, 이성휘 그리고 편집자 박활성 간의 대화를 진행한다.

‹모든 것이면서 아무것도 아닌 것›에서 안규철의 신작은 우리가 하는 일이 갖고 있는 근본적인 역설과 모순을 다루고 있다. 우리의 일들은 왜 실패하는가? 유리컵들이 저마다 다른 높이의 소리를 갖고 있는 것도, 스웨터의 실을 풀면 다시 새로 스웨터를 짤 수 있다는 것도, 거울들에 반사된 빛을 모아서 벽에 둥근 달의 모양을 그릴 수 있다는 것도, 공들이 저마다 다른 높이로 튀어 오른다는 것도 전혀 새로운 일이 아니다. 그것들은 극적인 사건이나 어떤 조형적인 절정의 순간을 추구하지 않는다. 각자의 위치에서 주어진 조건을 받아들이며(견뎌내며) 주어진 일을 반복적으로 수행할 뿐이다. 즉 아무 일도 일어나지 않는다고 할 수 있다. 극적인 사건들이 쉴 새 없이 일어나는 세상과, 세상보다 더 극적인 사건들로 채워지곤 하는 미술관들의 드라마, 이벤트는 여기에 없다. 그러면 대체 이것들은 무엇을 보여주기 위해 여기 있는가? 이들은 무슨 일을 하는 것인가?
