HITE Foundation is pleased to announce the grand opening of HITE Collection. Established to share its collection with the public, HITE Collection opens with an exhibition of one of the most renowned sculptors in the history of modern and contemporary Korean sculpture, Kwon Jin Kyu, and Cause & Effect, a permanent installation by Do Ho Suh. HITE Foundation shall broaden access to understanding and communicating art by programming varied exhibitions and undertaking a thorough study of the pieces in the collection.
Along with the plan to construct an exhibition hall for new commissions, HITE Foundation decided to commission Do Ho Suh to develop a long-term installation for the space. The renovation plan for the exhibition hall and the design of his work were conducted simultaneously. For this commission Do Ho Suh wanted to integrate the work into the architectural and functional characteristics of the exhibition hall and also to make the heritage and spirit of modern and contemporary Korean sculpture and painting visible as exemplified by HITE Foundation’s Kwon Jin Kyu collection.
Documentary videos of Cause & Effect and a book titled In-Yeon accompany this commission and offer glimpses of the entire process from inception, design and production to installation as well as the insights and recollections of a number of people related to the project.
The whole process, from the construction of the exhibition hall to HITE Collection’s opening exhibition, was initiated with Do Ho Suh’s commission for HITE Foundation. This experience set the innovative example of developing an exhibition that is organized as a unique process of designing the space within which the artwork expanded. With this exhibition as its departure point, HITE Collection intends to develop an exhibition program that expands on this challenging and unique form of exhibition making. The long-term ambition is also to develop a public program that offers Hitejinro employees and eventually its neighbors and general public, and an enhanced cultural experience that allows them to engage in dynamic processes, such as the commissioned projects, that reflect HITE’s own dynamism and open up new sources of inspiration.

하이트문화재단은 소장 미술품을 전시하고 이를 일반과 공유하고자 하이트컬렉션을 개관하였다. 첫 전시에서는 문화재단이 소장하고 있는 한국 근현대 대표 조각가 권진규의 작품 전시와 서도호의 상설 설치 작품을 선보인다. 앞으로도 소장품에 대한 깊이있는 연구를 바탕으로 하는 다양한 전시를 기획하여 미술에 대한 이해와 공감의 기회를 넓히고자 한다.
전시관 조성 계획과 더불어 새로운 공간의 설치 작업을 위하여 하이트문화재단은 서도호 작가의 커미션을 진행하였다. 전시관 조성 레노베이션 계획과 작품 디자인을 함께 진행함으로써 작가는 하이트진로 본사 로비 전시관 공간에 가장 적합한 작품을 제작하고자 하였으며, 동시에 문화재단 소장 권진규컬렉션에서 비롯되는 한국근현대 조형 미술의 정신을 계승하는 의미를 염두에 두었다.
또한 하이트컬렉션 개관전에서 공개되는 ‹인과› 다큐멘터리 영상물과 ‹인연›이라는 제목의 책은 작품의 고안에서부터 제작, 설치에 이르는 모든 과정을 기록하고 이에 관련된 많은 사람들을 기억하고자 하는 뜻을 담았다.
전시관 조성, 하이트문화재단의 서도호 커미션 작업에서 비롯되어 하이트컬렉션 개관전에 이르는 일련의 과정들은 공간과 작품 설계, 이에서 보다 확장된 작업들로 구성한 전시로 이어지는 흥미로운 예가 되었다. 나아가 앞으로 하이트컬렉션에서 선보일 유사한 형태의 전시들을 기대할 수 있게 되었다.
