HITE Foundation is pleased to announce the grand opening of HITE Collection. Established to share its collection with the public, HITE Collection opens with an exhibition of one of the most renowned sculptors in the history of modern and contemporary Korean sculpture, Jinkyu Kwon, and Cause & Effect, a permanent installation by Doho Suh. HITE Foundation shall broaden access to understanding and communicating art by programming varied exhibitions and undertaking a thorough study of the pieces in the collection.
Jinkyu Kwon, one of the most renowned sculptors in the history of Korean modern art, was well-known for his terracotta works and his pieces in the technique of varnishing with lacquer. In the 1960s, abstract sculpture was very popular in Korea. Kwon did not, however, follow this trend and instead created his own style by sculpting figurative shapes such as human and animal figures, and by experimenting with abstract figures in some of his reliefs and sculptures.
HITE Foundation’s Jinkyu Kwon collection consists of various characteristic works by Kwon that offer insights into the era he lived in, his unique technique, and the subject matters he addressed through his work. The Jinkyu Kwon exhibition curated for HITE Collection’s grand opening has its theme as “Exile: Eternal-Internal.” Through this exhibition, we wanted to shed new light on Kwon’s artistic practice as a study of the nature of human existence. HITE Collection aims to organize numerous exhibitions to explore the various characteristics of Kwon’s work in order to offer new means of engaging with this artist’s practice.

하이트문화재단은 소장 미술품을 전시하고 이를 일반과 공유하고자 하이트컬렉션을 개관하였다. 첫 전시에서는 문화재단이 소장하고 있는 한국 근현대 대표 조각가 권진규의 작품 전시와 서도호의 상설 설치 작품을 선보인다. 앞으로도 소장품에 대한 깊이있는 연구를 바탕으로 하는 다양한 전시를 기획하여 미술에 대한 이해와 공감의 기회를 넓히고자 한다.
권진규는 한국근대조각의 대표작가로서 테라코타와 건칠 등의 기법을 중심으로 작업하였다. 1960년대 한국조각계는 추상조각이 유행이었다. 그러나 권진규는 당시의 유행에 휩쓸리지 않고 인물상, 동물상 등의 구상조각을 중심으로 하면서, 일부 부조 또는 조각 작품에서 추상적인 형태를 시도하는 등 자신만의 독자적인 세계를 구축하였다.
하이트문화재단의 권진규 컬렉션은 연대, 기법과 소재면에서 권진규의 작업세계를 아우르는 광범위한 작품으로 구성되어 있다. 하이트컬렉션의 개관전에서 공개되는 권진규의 작품들은 ‘탈주’라는 주제 아래 모은 것으로, ‘영원’과 ‘내면’으로의 탈주를 통해 존재의 본질을 탐구하려 했던 권진규의 작품세계를 새롭게 조명하고자 하였다. 하이트컬렉션은 향후 권진규 작품세계의 크고 작은 특징들에 주목하는 주제전을 통하여 작가에 대한 이해와 공감의 기회를 다양하게 마련하고자 한다.
