HITE Collection is pleased to present Landscape from August 31, 2012 through January 26, 2013, the group exhibition of 7 international artists whose work can be read in various perspectives through the images of landscape. Along with this year’s recent works of Sungsic Moon, Hoin Lee, Dongsik Rim and Wongi Sul, Hernan Bas, Elizabeth Magill and George Shaw also present selections of their significant works.
In today’s modern city, natural landscape no longer reflects the lives of people who live in it; it is now rather something that people miss or are nostalgic about. Invisible parts of trees and grass, forests and meadows, wind and sunray not only constitute landscape, but also connect one’s related memory or experience. This exhibition reconsiders today’s meaning of “landscape”, by highlighting its role that extends further from a window through which the great nature is viewed, to a link that connects memories and experiences in life.
Through the paintings of 7 artists who work with landscape in different ways, this exhibition suggests what landscape actually means today. Sungsic Moon studies the relationship with nature by artificially positioning natural objects in landscape. Wongi Sul abstracts nature by expressing his personal experience. Hoin Lee, who has been painting the images of artificial islands that he found on the internet or media, paints as if snapshot moments in nature. Dongsik Rim who chooses to paint outdoors, surrounded by nature, presents his latest works that depict familiar landscape of where he usually goes for a walk. Hernan Bas, who recently came into the spotlight, interprets epic landscape that narrates beyond reality. For Bas, landscape is the means of perceiving this world. Through her paintings, Elizabeth Magill attempts to deliver sublime beauty of the hidden side of landscape. George Shaw takes landscape as a stage on which his frightening and unpleasant memories or emotions of past are shown. Landscapes in their paintings depict moments and sites that come from the artists’ own experience and memory, rather than the actual nature, therefore suggest variable forms of nature through many different methods. By looking at these paintings audience will come to experience different times and places.

하이트컬렉션은 2012년 8월 31일부터 2013년 1월 26일까지 «풍경»전을 개최한다. 이 전시는 다양한 해석으로 ‘풍경’의 이미지를 다루는 국내외 작가 7명의 회화 작업을 보여준다. 참여작가 문성식, 설원기, 이호인, 임동식은 2012년의 새로운 작업들을, 헤르난 바스, 엘리자베스 매길, 조지 쇼 역시 그들의 대표적인 작업들을 선보인다.
현대의 도시 생활에서 자연의 풍경은 더 이상 삶의 풍경이 아니라 동경의 대상이거나 기억의 장소로 작동한다. 풀과 나무, 숲과 들판, 바람과 빛의 비가시적 부분들은 풍경의 요소이기도 하지만 기억이나 경험을 연결하는 역할을 한다. 따라서 이 전시는 자연을 보여주는 창으로 머물지 않고 기억이나 경험을 연결하는 풍경의 역할을 조명함으로써 현대에서의 풍경의 의미를 재고해 보는 전시이다.
이번 전시는 각기 다른 방식으로 자연의 이미지를 다루는 작가들의 회화 작업을 통해 현대에서의 풍경의 의미를 생각해본다. 문성식은 자연물을 인공적으로 배치하여 풍경을 표현해 왔던 기존의 방식을 벗어나 자연과의 관계를 탐구한다. 설원기는 자신의 경험을 여러 단층으로 표현하여 추상화된 자연을 보여준다. 인터넷이나 미디어에서 찾은 인공적인 요소가 존재하는 섬의 이미지를 부감법으로 그려냈던 이호인은 자연의 순간을 스냅사진처럼 표현함으로써 기억의 한 부분을 기록한다. 오랜 기간 자연으로 나가 풍경을 그리는 전통적인 방식을 사용하여 작업하였던 임동식은 작가가 일상적으로 나서곤 했던 산책길을 그린 최신작을 선보인다. 최근 미술계의 주목을 받고 있는 헤르난 바스는 현실을 넘어서는 서사적인 풍경에 대한 해석을 보여준다. 그에게 있어서 풍경은 사람들이 세상을 인식하는 방식이기도 하다. 엘리자베스 매길은 회화를 통해 아름다운 풍경 이면의 숭고미를 전달하는 시도를 한다. 조지 쇼는 기억 속의 무서웠던 혹은 기분 나빴던 어린 시절의 기억이나 감정을 풍경이라는 무대 위에 보여준다. 이들의 작품에서 풍경은 자연을 재현하는 것이 아니라 자신의 기억의 장소나 경험의 순간이다. 따라서 가변적이고 변화하는 자연의 모습을 여러 가지 다른 방법으로 제시하고 있다. 작가들이 보여주는 여러 풍경을 통해 관람객은 다른 시간, 다른 장소의 기억 속으로 이동하게 될 것이다.
