HITE Collection is pleased to present the group exhibition entitled Four Corners of the World from September 4 through December 14, 2013. This is an exhibition of work by seven artists who come from the four corners of the world: Hurvin Anderson (UK), Frédéric Bruly Bouabré (Ivory Coast), Marcel Dzama (Canada/USA), Bernard Frize (France), Tim Johnson (Australia), Amikam Toren (Israel/UK) and Zhang Enli (China). The exhibition shows a variety of medium and artistic traditions through the work of 7 artists, and highlights each internationally renowned artist’s artistic practice and imagination that happens two-dimensionally within four corners of the rectangular format of painting.
Frédéric Bruly Bouabré and Tim Johnson both see themselves in cosmic schemes of things, finding meaning far beyond the immediate contexts within which they are working. Zhang Enli and Hurvin Anderson, on the other hand, are more personal, whereas for Bernard Frize and Amikam Toren their message is in the medium of their artistic practice. Marcel Dzama by contrast is introspective, delving into his subconscious in order to conjure up dream-like pictures that are extremely elliptical.
Jonathan Watkins, the curator of this exhibition and the director of Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, UK, states that the seven artists share a commitment to the expression of thoughts and feelings within the assumed rectangular format of painting. They are stylistically diverse, working in a variety of media and drawn from distinctly different aesthetic traditions. It is understood by them to be not a window that opens out onto other worlds with illusionistic effect, but rather a flat delimited plane that is infinitely divisible, a place of infinite possibility – a geometric shape that inspires invention and imaginative projection onto itself.
On 2 September, Amikam Toren will be in conversation with Jonathan Watkins, who is going to talk on the work of the seven artists, explaining a number of possibilities of a flat space within the rectangular frame of painting. Amikam Toren, as a participating artist, concentrates on his general interest in the nature of things and the essence of imagery, by which his overall artistic practice has been developed. This event will come as a good opportunity to observe very one side of the contemporary painting.

하이트컬렉션은 오는 9월 4일부터 12월 14일까지 그룹전 «세계의 네 모서리»를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 세계의 네 모서리, 즉 세계 방방곡곡에서 온 7인의 작가들-허빈 앤더슨(영국), 프레데릭 브륄리 부아브레(코트디부아르), 마르셀 드자마(캐나다/미국), 베르나르 프리즈(프랑스), 팀 존슨(호주), 아미캄 토렌(이스라엘/영국), 장 엔리(중국)-의 작품을 한데 모아 선보인다. 이 전시는 국제적인 작가들의 작품을 통해서 다양한 양식과 상이한 미적 태도를 보여주고자 하며, 회화의 사각 프레임 안에서 보여지는 각 작가의 상상적 요소들을 집중적으로 조명한다.
프레데릭 브륄리 부아브레와 팀 존슨 두 작가는 우주적 맥락에서 그들 자신의 모습을 바라보고, 그들의 작업의 직접적인 문맥 너머 어딘가에 존재하는 의미를 탐색한다. 반면에 장 엔리와 허빈 앤더슨의 작업은 비교적 개인화된 것이고, 베르나르 프리즈와 아미캄 토렌은 그들의 예술적 행위에서 따르는 형식을 통해 그들만의 메시지를 전달한다. 마르셀 드자마는 보이진 않지만 함축된 의미를 지닌, 마치 꿈 같은 심상과 이미지들을 떠올리기 위해 끊임없이 스스로의 잠재의식을 탐구한다.
이번 전시의 기획자이자 영국 버밍엄의 아이콘 갤러리 디렉터인 조나단 왓킨스는 앞서 소개한 7인의 작가들이 흔히 직사각 형태로 여겨지는 회화의 형식을 공유하지만 각자 개인의 생각과 정서를 표현하는데 몰두한다고 말한다. 그들 작업의 다양성은 각양각색의 재료와 서로 뚜렷하게 다른 미적 전통과 배경에서 비롯된다. 그들에게 회화의 직사각형 프레임은 무한분할이 가능한 평면, 즉 무한한 가능성을 지닌, 새로운 생각의 원동력이 되는 동시에 상상력을 형상화시키는 기하학적 형태인 것이다.
2013년 9월 2일에는 기획자 조나단 왓킨스와 전시 참여작가인 아미캄 토렌이 각각 큐레이터 토크와 아티스트 토크를 진행한다. 조나단 왓킨스는 전시에 참여한 7인의 작가들의 작업을 중점적으로 살펴보며 회화의 사각 프레임 안에 평면적 공간이 갖는 수많은 가능성들에 관하여 이야기한다. 이어 아미캄 토렌은 사물의 본성과 이미지의 본질에 대한 관심을 바탕으로 발전시켜온 자신의 작업세계 전반을 이야기한다. 이번 토크 프로그램은 동시대 회화의 한 단면을 살펴보는 좋은 기회가 될 것이다.
